According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 3rd International Meeting on Hepatitis C Virus and Related Viruses, held August 30 - September 3, 1995, in Gold Coast, California, "Hepatitis C virus (HCV) core gene may generate a processed (P16) core protein in vitro in the presence of an arginine-to-lysine mutation at codon number 9; whereas wild type HCV core gene produces preferentially full length (P21) protein. To understand whether there are differential humoral immune responses for these two proteins in humans, we have gel-purified P21 and P16 from transformed E. coli and determined the titers of antibodies with patients' sera by western blot.
