According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 20th International Symposium on Blood Transfusion, entitled Trigger Factors in Transfusion Medicine, held October 4-6, 1995, in Groningen, The Netherlands, "Transfusion medicine and blood banking have evolved from the use of whole blood to plasma, red cell and platelet components, and now to mononuclear cell apheresis products for haemopoietic stem cell transplantations. Cultured or modified cells may represent the next transfusion product to support future cell therapies.
