INF-Alpha May Lower Cancer in Chronic HCV Patients

Interferon-alpha improves liver function in patients with chronic active hepatitis C with cirrhosis, and may protect against hepatocellular carcinoma, according to a study from Japan. It has been shown that risk factors associated with hepatocellular carcinoma include hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, especially in Africa and Southeast Asia. In Japan, however, the rate of HBsAg-positive patients with hepatocellular carcinoma is on the decline, but there is an increase in hepatocellular carcinomas associated with non-A, non-B hepatitis.
