Cost-Effectiveness of Experimental Treatments Compared

Federal antitrust officials gave their approval to major cancer centers to conduct a study comparing the cost and effectiveness of experimental breast cancer treatments.

The aim is to help the centers gather information to persuade insurance companies to cover the cost of treatments still in clinical trials.

Assistant Attorney General Anne K. Bingaman told the Southwest Oncology Group in San Antonio, Texas, and its clinical practices committee that they will be able to share the information among member hospitals. The group includes several dozen major universities and hospitals that specialize in treating cancer patients.
