Missouri Insurer Now Covers Bone-Marrow Transplantation

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri has agreed to offer immediate coverage for bone-marrow tranplantation, a treatment for breast cancer. Frederic C. Brussee, executive vice president at Blue Cross, said that his company will pay for bone-marrow transplants in women who undergo high-dose chemotherapy. Only members who medically qualify will get the treatment, he said. Brussee estimated that three or four women are affected by the policy change. Their cases will be reviewed by an independent peer review board, made up of two cancer specialists. Then, if the treatment is needed, Blue Cross will pay for it. The procedure...
