Women often wait weeks and undergo additional tests to confirm the results of an initial abnormal Pap smear, a test used to screen for cervical cancer. Soon there may be another test available that could provide immediate results. A fiberoptic device now being tested at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, provides immediate and noninvasive detection of precancerous cervical tissue. The prototype device relies on differences in the way that normal and abnormal cervical tissues absorb and emit light to detect cellular abnormalities, which can progress to cancer if left untreated.
