Market for Monoclonal Antibodies Set to Take-Off

Monoclonal antibodies - antibodies produced in the laboratory by converting the growth mechanism of a tumor into a factory for generating a specific antibody - were developed by two Nobel prize-winning scientists, Georges Kohler and Cesar Milstein, in 1975. Since that time, the use of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) has grown slowly. Their primary application has been in the diagnosis of various infectious diseases and to treat organ transplant rejection. In 1989, the total MAb market amounted to a relatively meager $61.9 million-$34.3 million from diagnostic applications and $27.6 million from therapeutic use.
