But skeptics fear scientists may unwittingly unleash genetic pollution which might prove more deadly than the traditional killers they seek to cure.
"We consider genetic engineering is a dangerous game with nature," said Isabelle Meister, team leader for Greenpeace International's Genetic Engineering Campaign.
Experts like Meister worry that products which can enhance crop yields might have sinister, unimagined properties that might devastate the natural and animal world.
