Higher Risk of Cancer Found in Relatives of People with Benign Polyps

Siblings and parents of people with adenomatous polyps - benign growths in the colon - have nearly twice the risk of colorectal cancer compared to the general population, according to a study by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York, researchers published in the January 11, 1996, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study also found that colorectal cancer risk in siblings is increased even more significantly when the patient's adenoma is diagnosed before age 60 or when a parent has had colorectal cancer.
