Mutations in P53 Gene Predict Need for Aggressive Cancer Treatment

A study has found that the presence of mutations in the p53 tumor-suppressor gene identifies breast cancer patients at high risk of recurrence of the disease and death following initial treatment.

If the results are confirmed, physicians are predicted to have a method for identifying otherwise unrecognized high-risk breast cancer patients who could benefit from additional treatment following surgery.
