Patent Issued for Maspin, a Tumor Suppressor Protein In Breast Tissue

LXR Biotechnology Inc. (LXR), Richmond, California, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a patent covering Maspin, a tumor suppressor protein in breast tissue.

The protein was discovered by a group of scientists headed by Dr. Ruth Sager of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts. The team of researchers at Dana-Farber, in collaboration with scientists from LXR Biotechnology, reported that Maspin levels in highly metastatic breast tumors are greatly reduced.
