Fragile Spot in Chromosome Implicated in Wide Range of Cancers

Researchers who announced the discovery of a gene important in lung cancer in 1996 have reported new data that the fragile histidine triad (FHIT), which encompasses the most common fragile site found to date in human chromosomes, is also abnormal in breast cancer and other types of tumors.

The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), held in Washington, D.C., April 20-24, 1996. In addition to lung cancer, the researchers previously reported finding altered FHIT genes in colon, stomach, and other digestive tract cancers.
