DES Carcinogenicity: Effect Not Weakened Through 4th Generation

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) complications are transmitted through the germ line and its carcinogenic effects are not diluted through the fourth generation.

DES is a synthetic hormone that was used in pregnant women at high risk of miscarriage. DES usage peaked during the 1950's and millions of women were given DES before its carcinogenic effects were described.

Recent research has shown that children exposed to DES in utero (prenatally) have an unusually high percentage of reproductive problems/cancers compared to their unexposed counterparts. Studies up to this point have not determined whether the effect was limited to the children who were...
