Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Disease More Likely in Women With High Red Meat Intake

Older women who consume a diet rich in red meat and animal fat have an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).

NHL incidence increased 73 percent between the years 1973 and 1991. This increase was greater than in all other cancers except prostate cancer in men, skin melanoma in both sexes, and lung cancer in women. The most dramatic rise has been seen in older persons.

A higher risk of developing NHL has been documented most consistently in patients with immunodeficiencies, whether they be inherited, medically induced (organ transplantation), or acquired (HIV/AIDS).
