High Metastatic Risk Indicated in Patients with Elevated p53 Levels

A preoperative finding of an elevated p53 level in a patient with gastric carcinoma is an indication that the patient is at high risk of metastases, investigators at the Paterson Research institute for Cancer Research in Manchester, United Kingdom, report.

In a study published in the May 15, 1996, issue of Cancer, Dr. Peter L. Stern and colleagues measured p53 levels in 200 gastric carcinoma samples and then correlated p53 expression and the course of clinical disease. Stern reported that 42.5 percent of gastric carcinomas expressed elevated levels of p53 and that "... p53 accumulation positivity correlated with increasing tumor stage and size."
