Researcher Examines Soybeans for Anti-Cancer Effects

Lin Yan, Ph.D., Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, received a $35,000 grant from the Nebraska Soybean Board to examine whether soybeans grown in high-selenium soil, such as in Nebraska, have greater anti-cancer properties than those grown in soil with low levels of selenium, a trace element necessary for human nutrition.

Yan's study examines whether high-selenium soybeans affect tumor formation and development and reduce the ability of cancer to spread in laboratory animals. Past studies have suggested that selenium supplements in the diet inhibit the growth of tumors.
