Engineers Attack Cancer with New Technologies

Engineers have been working with chemists, physicians, and other professionals to develop diagnostic tools to fight cancer.

In the June 10, 1996, issue of Design News magazine, engineering breakthroughs in the fight against some of the deadliest cancers were highlighted - those that invade the breast, lungs, and cervix.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. In the U.S. alone, about 46,000 women with this disease die each year.

Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL), Bothell, Washington, has developed a new weapon - high-definition ultrasound that can tell the difference between malignant and benign breast...
