The gene was isolated by Dr. Rodney Croteau, Washington State University, Seattle. In addition, Cytoclonal scientists isolated a related gene region from a fungus that makes Taxol. Dr. Arthur P. Bollon, Cytoclonal Pharmaceutics, said, "the gene may represent a critical step in the production of Taxol and therefore, has the potential to reduce the costs to manufacture the drug. Several drugs have been effectively manufactured by genetic engineering such as interferon and insulin."
