Systematic Biopsy Advised for Cancer Patients

Dr. David Shepherd and colleagues at Washington University reported in the current issue of the Journal of Urology that "men with isolated prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia on needle biopsy should undergo repeat biopsy via a systematic as opposed to a directed technique," (J Urol 1996;168:460-463).

The Washington University researchers reviewed the records of 66 patients in whom "isolated prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia was found on needle biopsy of the prostate." Cancer was found on repeat biopsy in 64 percent of the patients.
