Experts Uncertain About Abortion-Breast Cancer Link

Early this year, subway riders in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, D.C. started to see anti-abortion billboards with an unsettling message: "Women Who Choose Abortion Suffer More and Deadlier Breast Cancer."

Now a similar claim appears in a medical study that received widespread criticism when it was released October 11, 1996.

The study's authors from Pennsylvania State University's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Baruch College in New York City said that a woman who has an abortion is 30 percent more likely to develop breast cancer later in life. They attribute some 5,000 cases of breast cancer each year to...
