The pilot study, believed to be the first use of gene therapy in Wisconsin and the first test of "gene gun" technology in cancer patients, attempts to produce an immune response powerful enough to stop tumor growth in patients, according to Dr. David Mahvi, UWCCC.
By evaluating the safety and practicality of the approach in patients with aggressive cancers - melanoma and soft tissue sarcomas, researchers hope to find a better way to treat tumors that are hard to stop and tend to return, Mahvi said.
