Proposition May Put Pressure on Marijuana Project

California's Proposition 215 could be a boon to the production of marijuana cultivated at the University of Mississippi research farm, but some connected to pharmaceutical research at the University say that medical interests were not the impetus for the Proposition, but simply legalization of the drug.

Proposition 215, passed by California voters, legalizes marijuana use for medical purposes when prescribed by a physician. Physicians can prescribe the drug for patients suffering from cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, arthritis, and other illnesses. Under Proposition 215, patients obtaining marijuana for medical purposes are not subject to criminal prosecution.
