Cancer Institute Promises Clearer Mammogram Advice

The top U.S. cancer official promised women in their 40s that they would have clearer information on whether they should have mammograms.

Dr. Richard Klausner, U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) acknowledged to a Senate panel that an NCI advisory panel's recent refusal to state whether women in that age group should have the breast cancer screening had muddied the waters. That panel basically said women should make up their own minds.

A separate advisory panel charged with drawing up a more definitive report has been planned and Klausner said the goal, at a minimum, would be to lay out clearly the benefits and drawbacks for screening.
