HIV-1 Vpr Tumor Suppressive Effects Reported

Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and the University of South Florida College of Medicine reported that the HIV-1 Vpr accessory gene has been found to suppress tumors and might be used in gene therapy for human cancer.

The finding was published in the February 1997 issue of the journal DNA and Cell Biology (Vol. 16, No. 2). In a paper entitled, "In Vitro and In Vivo Tumor Growth Suppression by HIV-1 Vpr," by Sundarasamy Mahalingam and colleagues, the authors explore the effect of Vpr on cell function.
