A causal relationship between production of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) and cell survival has been shown in previous research. Activation of iNOS has been shown to result in the production of high levels of NO, which is then associated with a cytotoxic reaction against pathogens and tumor cells. Several studies have shown that regression of tumors and metastases can be induced by the transfection of iNOS into tumor cells.
