According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 4-8, 1997, in Miami Beach, Florida, "A novel RNA virus has been associated with hepatitis, and it has been provisionally designated as hepatitis G virus (HGV). Apparently the HGV can be associated with chronic hepatitis with and without co-infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV), but is not clear whether HGV infection is associated or not with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.
