According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 4th International Meeting on Hepatitis C Virus and Related Viruses, Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis, held March 6-10, 1997, in Kyoto, Japan, "The importance of HGV/GBV-C infection in the development of liver cancer in the area with high prevalence of both HBV and HCV was investigated by studying sera from 108 histologically confirmed liver cancer patients in Thailand. The samples were tested for HGV/GBV-C RNA by RT-PCR using primers in the 5'-noncoding region and core region and were confirmed by nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the amplification products.
