Liposome-Mediated Therapy for Disseminated Pancreatic Cancer

Liposome-mediated herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk)/ganciclovir (GCV) suicide-based gene therapy was successful in a murine model of peritoneal dissemination of pancreatic cancer.

Peritoneal dissemination is a common complication of cancers of the digestive tract. Unfortunately, patients who have reached this point often have metastases that are refractory to existing chemo-, radio-, endocrine, and/or immune therapies. Potent therapeutics are desperately needed.

"Gene therapy strategies may provide therapeutic benefits with a more favorable risk-benefit ratio than the current conventional treatments," noted Kazunori Aoki and colleagues...
