Vaccine Program Has Lowered Liver Cancers in Children

Taiwan's program of universal hepatitis B vaccination has made a dramatic impact on the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in children, according to a report from the Taiwan Childhood Hepatoma Study Group.

"These data are evidence that prevention of a viral infection in a population can reduce the incidence of a specific cancer," researcher Mei-Hwei Chang and colleagues wrote ("Universal Hepatitis B Vaccination in Taiwan and the Incidence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Children," The New England Journal of Medicine, June 26, 1997;336(26):1855-1860).
