According to an abstract submitted by the author to the conference Vaccines Beyond 2000, held July 6-9, 1997, in Queensland, Australia, "Although prompt diagnosis as a result of screening, followed by surgical resection, have had a dramatic effect on survival after early melanoma, the prognosis for metastatic disease remains extremely poor. Rare cases of spontaneous regression of primary melanoma are thought to be the result of T cell mediated suppression/rejection of the tumour, and this has stimulated therapeutic approaches aimed at boosting the endogenous cytotoxic T cell immune response.
