"Differential Ganciclovir-Mediated Cytotoxicity and Bystander Killing in Human Colon Carcinoma Cells Expressing Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase."

Published in Cancer Weekly, September 15th, 1997

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 88th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, held April 12-16, 1997, in San Diego, California, "Human colon carcinoma cell lines, HT-29 and SW620, stably expressing herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) are sensitized to the cytotoxic effects of the anti-viral drug, ganciclovir (GCV). Compared to HT-29 cells, SW620 cells were more sensitive to lower GCV concentrations, accumulated GCV triphosphate more rapidly, and incorporated higher levels of GCV into DNA. Following a 24 hr exposure to 10 (mu)M GCV, bystander killing was 2-6 fold greater in SW620 cells than HT-29 cells. This bystander effect was...
