Dental Screening Important Before Cancer Therapy

If someone diagnosed with cancer is a candidate for life-saving radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or bone-marrow transplantation, a visit to the dentist is crucial before treatment begins.

That's because any infections in the mouth that exist prior to treatment can be exacerbated by cancer therapies. Even a low-level tooth or gum infection can become a serious condition during cancer treatment.

If a problem in the mouth becomes severe, doctors may have to interrupt chemotherapy or radiation - and that interruption can compromise the patient's outcome in the fight against cancer.
