Blood and BAL Testing Reduces Need for Antivirals in BMT Recipients

Blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation should be tested for cytomegalovirus (CMV), say French researchers.

Such testing would improve the identification and early treatment rate of patients who are at high risk for CMV pneumonia after bone marrow transplant (BMT), said A. Ibrahim, Institut Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France, and colleagues ("Should Cytomegalovirus Be Tested for in Both Blood and Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid of Patients at a High Risk of CMV Pneumonia after Bone Marrow Transplantation'", British Journal of Haematology, 1997;98:222-227).
