Lawsuit May Open Fresh Front in Tobacco Wars

The lawyer who won a historic cash verdict against a cigarette maker filed a pioneering lawsuit to get tobacco companies to pay some of the billions of dollars already paid to sick asbestos workers, lawyers said.

"It's a new front for the tobacco industry," said Dick Daynard, Tobacco Products Liability Project.

Attorneys working with lawyer Norwood Wilner, Jacksonville, Florida, said a lawsuit on behalf of Raymark Industries against Philip Morris Cos. Inc. and other cigarette companies had been filed in Florida's Duval County Court and federal court in Atlanta, Georgia.
