TNF(alpha) Facilitates Immune-Mediated Clearance of Adenoviral Vectors

Increased understanding of the role of tumor necrosis factor (alpha) (TNF(alpha)) in immune-mediated clearance of adenoviral vectors opens avenues for increasing the effectiveness of the vectors in gene therapy studies.

TNF(alpha) is a multifunctional cytokine. In addition to its antitumor effects, it has many proinflammatory properties. Among its actions are the upregulation of adhesion molecules (i.e., intercellular adhesion molecule 1, which recruits leukocytes to the site of inflammation).
