According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 3rd European Conference on Gene Therapy of Cancer, held September 11-13, 1997, in Berlin, Germany, "Expression of B7 on tumor cells can circumvent T cell tolerance and lead to the generation of tumor cell specific T cell immunity. Therefore, gene modified tumor cells with vectors for the expression of B7 have been extensively studied in experimental tumor cell vaccination. The effect of B7 expression on the generation of protective anti-tumor immunity has been attributed primarily to (1) activation of energized tumor specific T cells and (2) more efficient generation of tumor specific killer T cells.
