Ex Vivo Gene Therapy
Mesothelial Cells: An Ideal Carrier Cell for Systemic Gene Therapy
November 24th, 1997
Simple to get, simple to process, and simple to reimplant: mesothelial cells represent ideal carrier cells for ex vivo gene therapy. Ex vivo gene therapy using autologous cells has been fraught with trials and tribulations, for reasons both practical and economical. First, the need for autologous cells to avoid immune rejection requires that they be harvested, a process can destroy certain types of cells. Second, once harvested, some cell types are difficult to grow in vitro, requiring complicated culturing processes, as well as sorting and purifying procedures.
