Researchers Find Another "Mismatch" Repair Gene To Cancer Susceptibility

Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have shown for the first time that mutations in another member of the "mismatch repair" gene family, called MSH6, cause cancer susceptibility in mammals. The finding, reported in the November 14, 1997, issue of the journal Cell, promises to aid diagnosis and open a new path for research in cancer predisposition and development in humans. "This is a new cancer gene that has not been seen before," said Dr. Raju Kucherlapati, professor and chairman of molecular genetics at Einstein.
