Modified Vaccinia Vector Shows Promise As Cancer Vaccine

In vitro results from using a replication deficient vaccinia virus, modified to express the human tyrosinase as a tumor associated antigen (TAA) as a cancer vaccine, are promising. I. Drexler, representing colleagues from the Institute for Molecular Virology, the Technical University of Dresden, and the Johannes Gutenberg-University, Germany, presented results at the 3rd European Conference on Gene Therapy of Cancer, held September 11-13, 1997, in Berlin, Germany, suggesting that the modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) might have a successful future as a cancer immunotherapeutic.
