Progress has been Made, But Miles to Go, says HHS Secretary

More women are getting mammograms than ever before, and the mortality rate from breast cancer has dropped enough so that women no longer look at the disease as a death sentence, Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala said. "Think how far we've come," Shalala said in a speech at Indiana University. "For the first time, the tide seems to be going our way." The disease strikes about 180,000 American women each year, and is expected to kill 44,000 in 1996. The reported incidence of breast cancer has risen by about 1 percent a year since the 1940s.
