Lottery System for Cancer Drug Offers Hope, Frustration

A Massachusetts woman who may have only weeks to live believes an experimental cancer drug could be her only chance at survival. However, the woman learned that her number was not chosen in the drug manufacturer's internal lottery, excluding her from the small group of critically ill women across the country with access to the drug. When the 32-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, doctors at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center did all they could for Susan, the mother of two young children, whose cancer was particularly aggressive.
