Maternal AZT Linked to Cancer in Mouse, Monkey Studies

Maternal use of zidovudine (AZT) during pregnancy protects children against HIV transmission but may cause cancer later in life, animal studies suggest.

A National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel concluded that AZT benefits far outweigh these theoretical risks, but advised that they be discussed when counseling pregnant women with HIV infection. Meanwhile, extensive follow-up studies continue.

The animal studies showed that AZT becomes incorporated into the DNA of monkeys and mice whose mothers received AZT during pregnancy.
