Older Nuclear Workers at Great Risk of Rare Cancer

Nuclear plant workers older than 45 who are exposed to low levels of radiation run a greater-than-normal risk of multiple myeloma, a rare form of cancer, according to a study.

Epidemiologists at the University of North Carolina based their conclusions on radiation dose records and death certificates from 115,143 workers at the Savannah River Site and three other nuclear facilities. Of the 24,000 workers who died, 98 suffered from multiple myeloma.

Only nine cases were found among former SRS employees, so workers should not be alarmed, lead researcher Steve Wing said.
