Doctors Use Gene Therapy in Treatment of Cancer

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, have broken new ground - using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and gene therapy to fight cancer, specifically ovarian cancer.

Dr. Dirk Kieback, Baylor, oversaw the administration of a solution containing the gene-virus combination that is key to the gene therapy.

The adenovirus used in the treatment is an inactivated cold virus that carries a thymidine kinase gene. It reportedly makes the cancer cells susceptible to the anti-viral drug acyclovir, which is used to fight herpes virus infections.
