Bone Marrow Engraftment Patent Issued Using Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Osiris Therapeutics, Inc., Baltimore, Maryland, announced that the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has issued a patent containing broad claims directed to methods for enhancing the regeneration of a patient's bone marrow using human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) following damage by chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

The patent, based on discoveries from Case Western Reserve University and assigned to Osiris, covers the use of MSCs in bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplants to reconstitute bone marrow stroma, the connective tissue in bone marrow upon which blood cell formation occurs.
