It was the first time that cancer of the heart had been successfully treated by what is known as an "autotransplant," said Michael Reardon, Houston heart surgeon.
The patient, a 20-year-old college student of New Orleans, was doing well after the six-hour operation.
"I couldn't believe (that) I was still alive," he told reporters from his hospital bed at Methodist Hospital, where the surgery was performed.
