Texas Surgeons Take Out Man's Heart To Treat Cancer

A form of cancer got treatment when doctors pulled a man's heart out of his body, snipped away a lemon-sized cancerous tumor, and put his heart back in.

It was the first time that cancer of the heart had been successfully treated by what is known as an "autotransplant," said Michael Reardon, Houston heart surgeon.

The patient, a 20-year-old college student of New Orleans, was doing well after the six-hour operation.

"I couldn't believe (that) I was still alive," he told reporters from his hospital bed at Methodist Hospital, where the surgery was performed.
