Preclinical Model Demonstrates Safety of Suicide Gene Therapy

A preclinical murine model has demonstrated the safety of herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase/ganciclovir (HSVtk/GSV) suicide gene therapy for prostate cancer.

Terry L. Timme and a team of researchers from numerous institutions evaluated the safety and potential toxicity of an adenoviral (ADV) vector containing the HSVtk gene in a clinically relevant murine model ("Local Inflammatory Response and Vector Spread after Direct Intraprostatic Injection of a Recombinant Adenovirus Containing the Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase Gene and Ganciclovir Therapy in Mice," Cancer Gene Therapy, March/April 1998;5(2):74-82).
