Specialists Discuss Treatment Advances and Challenges in Cancer Care

Nearly 19,000 cancer specialists from around the world gathered at the 34th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, held May 16-19, 1998, in Los Angeles, California, to discuss the latest cancer treatment advances, and address some of the greatest challenges still facing the field.

"Findings to be released at [the 1998] ASCO meeting are especially encouraging," said Robert J. Mayer, M.D., ASCO. "Information about the relative benefits of tamoxifen and raloxifene in preventing breast cancer [were] presented, as [well as] exciting new biologic therapies that may herald an entirely new era of cancer treatment."
