United Kingdom Anti-Smoking Lobby Mounts Fresh Assault

Britain's leading anti-smoking group urged the government to call cigarette manufacturers to account for what it called systematic attempts to deceive the public about the dangers of tobacco.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said it was clear from the tobacco industry's own documents and statements that it understands that smoking causes cancer, that nicotine is addictive and that advertising encourages youngsters to start smoking.

"We cannot go on having a multi-billion pound rogue business denying publicly what they know privately," Clive Bates, ASH, said.
