"Castration Induces an Increase in the Expression of Telomerase Activity in the Prostate of Nonhuman Primates."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 80th Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society, held June 24-27, 1998, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "It has recently been demonstrated that telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein that synthesizes the telomeric repeats of TTAGGG de novo and adds them to the ends of mammalian chromosomes, may play a pivotal role in the aging process and in the progression of cancer. Telomerase activity is not detectable in the normal human prostate. However, the majority of human prostate cancer tissues exhibit telomerase activity.
